Blog Image - Beyond Tariffs Building Agile, Compliance-Ready Supp

In the latest episode of MetaPod, host Ron Crabtree sat down with seasoned supply chain expert J. Gregory “Greg” Smith to explore one of the most urgent conversations in operations today: how the life sciences industry and global supply chains at large must respond to ongoing tariff pressures, data fragmentation, and a reactive approach to risk. With over 25 years of experience, including senior roles at Deloitte, Gartner, and IBM, Greg brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. He now leads his own practice, advising clients on holistic supply chain challenges. Throughout their conversation, they dive deep into real-world diagnostics and transformation strategies relevant across industries, but especially urgent for those in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical devices.

Tariffs as a Catalyst for Change

Greg kicks off the conversation by addressing the “tariff catastrophe.” While tariffs fluctuate across industries, there’s notably less flexibility in the life sciences sector. With the U.S. heavily reliant on imports from countries like India and China for pharmaceuticals and raw materials, recent 90-day tariff mandates have become a wake-up call. Tariffs are not just a pricing issue. They signal that your supply chain’s current operating model may be too fragile, slow, and siloed to weather modern disruptions.

Data, Data, Data

If there’s a recurring theme in the episode, it's this: the most valuable asset in any supply chain is not inventory – it’s data.

Greg shares a story about working with a Fortune 50 pharmaceutical company that thought its procurement systems were streamlined. Upon visiting the floor, he discovered operators were relying on Excel spreadsheets, manually feeding data into multiple disconnected systems. This resulted in slow decision-making, inconsistent metrics, and misaligned goals across departments. The solution was to introduce AI and create a centralized, cross-functional data layer to connect procurement, planning, and logistics in real time. Whether you’re in life sciences or manufacturing, the lesson is clear: integrated, accessible, and accurate data is the foundation for smarter decisions.

The Risk of Reactive Thinking

One of the podcast’s most compelling segments highlights the dangers of reactive supply chain planning. Greg points out that after COVID exposed systemic weaknesses, many companies fell back into old habits.

Now, with tariff mandates, limited contract manufacturing capacity, and strained vendor relationships, leaders must rethink risk not just from a 30-day lens, but across six weeks, six months, and six years. For example, relying too heavily on contracts manufacturers may offer short-term relief, but without long-term planning, it can collapse under pressure, especially if suppliers can’t scale or meet quality requirements.

Greg emphasizes that this kind of planning must be driven by leadership. He advocates for a value stream owner, a role accountable for aligning all supply chain functions with market demand and internal capabilities.

What You Should Do Now

Ron and Greg agree that companies can’t afford to wait for the perfect plan. Leaders should:

  • Map their current state. Understand where handoffs happen, what systems are used, and where breakdowns occur.
  • Prioritize integration between systems and departments.
  • Use real-time data to assess supplier capacity, procurement timelines, and production plans.
  • Establish board-level oversight of supply chain strategy, not just execution.
  • Start small, learn fast. Pilot integration with one product line, then expand.
