Ron outlined five key stages of BPM:

- Modeling: Mapping workflows to analyse scenarios.

- Optimization: Embedding changes into long-term operations.
BPM must prioritize people first, then process, and finally technology. Many organizations make the mistake of leading with technology, when in fact sustainable change depends on equipping people with the right skills and support.
Value Stream Mapping in Action
Ron illustrates BPM with a case study from a company that designs and builds storage buildings. The business faced two major problems: long lead times for delivering finished designs and high error rates and rework during the process.
By applying value stream mapping, Ron helped the team visualize every step of the customer-to-production pipeline. This exercise revealed pain points, highlighted delays, and showed which IT systems were creating bottlenecks. The organization was able to identify a handful of critical technology integrations and skill shifts with the ability to dramatically cut lead times – from 16 weeks down to just four. More importantly, leaders gained clarity on where to focus improvements rather than trying to fix everything at once.
A Formula for Sustainable Change
To make operational improvements stick, Ron introduces a simple but powerful formula for sustainable change. Success depends on three factors:
- Discomfort (D): The urgency of “burning platform” for change.
- Vision (V): How clearly the organization can articulate its goals.
- Skills (S): Whether the team has the capabilities needed to execute.
By multiplying these three factors, leaders can calculate the likelihood of success. A low score in any one area dramatically reduces the odds of sustaining change. This framework gives leaders a practical way to identify where they must focus, whether it’s creating urgency, clarifying vision, or investing in skill development.
Leaders must also model the behaviors they expect from their teams in addition to setting clear goals. Management and leadership are not the same. True leaders guide by example, communicate clearly, and equip their people to succeed.
